Singapore Test Lab (STL) was proud to play a behind-the-scenes but crucial role in the unveiling of the River Crab Playground at Toa Payoh N1 Neighbourhood Park — community-driven project organised by the Housing & Development Board (HDB) under the Remaking Our Heartland (ROH) initiative.

Our role was simple but vital: to ensure the entire playground meets the stipulated safety standards so children and families could enjoy it with a peace of mind. Before the community came together for HDB Community Build Day on 6th April 2025, we carried out detailed inspections and assessments of all play structures, surfaces, and play equipment.

Designed with and for the community, nearly 2,000 residents, schoolchildren, and local stakeholders contributed ideas through workshops and surveys. The centrepiece? A crab-inspired climbing structure of Johora Singaporensis, Singapore’s native endangered freshwater crab. The playground features a fun obstacle-style setup including climbing nets, slides, rope challenges, a hammock swing, and freestanding play elements for children of all ages. Adding to the charm is the rubber flooring adorned with an otter design, created by a student from a nearby primary school—a fitting tribute to the river-themed concept.

The launch event, graced by Minister for National Development Mr Desmond Lee and Grassroots Adviser MP Mr Saktiandi Supaat, celebrates the community’s collective efforts and marked a meaningful milestone for Toa Payoh’s ROH Programme. Alongside the iconic Dragon Playground, this new landmark will bring generations of Toa Payoh residents together.

From our standpoint at STL, it’s always fulfilling to know that the work we do contributes directly to safe and meaningful spaces in our heartland towns. This project not only reflected community spirit but the importance of quality and safety in public spaces – values we uphold in every project we take on.

Congratulations to HDB and all Toa Payoh residents on the successful completion of this joyful, creative, and thoughtfully designed play space. We’re honoured to have been a part of this journey!
